President’s administration to stop expulsion of migrants on public health grounds.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced its decision to end the Title 42 Policy in May that allowed U.S. border officials, under public health authority, to quickly return migrants trying to cross the U.S. border to their native countries. Title 42 was put in place early in the coronavirus pandemic and had been renewed by President Biden last August.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus stated on Monday, “As a result of the CDC’s termination of its Title 42 public health order, we will likely face an increase in encounters above the current high levels.”
“There are a significant number of individuals who were unable to access the asylum system for the past two years, and who may decide that now is the time to come,” he continued. “We are doing everything we can to prepare for this increase, ensure we continue to process people humanely, and impose consequences on those who break the law.”
The state attorneys general have filed a lawsuit stating that this move by the president’s administration has violated the Administrative Procedure Act.
